Podcast #4: World vs World (Plus Beta Contest!)

bnc_podcast_ep_004

Faelor grabs resident PVP experts Esloan and Luperza to break down one of Guild War 2′s most anticipated modes: World vs World. The discussion totals nearly an hour, going over the very basics, how it drew inspiration from other games, and potential problems ArenaNet could face trying to handle the behemoth at release.

In addition to bringing an always entertaining podcast, we managed to grab a beta key from PAX East! To be in the running for this contest, you need to reply to this news entry using your Facebook or Twitter account (if they are already linked to our commenting system Disqus, you’re already set!). That entry needs to be a constructive comment; describing what you liked about the podcast, why you do or do not look forward to WvW, raise a question to one of the co-hosts, etc. In addition to this, you need to follow and/or like B&C page with the same Twitter or Facebook account to be a valid entry. We will stop accepting submissions as soon as the clock strikes midnight on Friday, April 13th, PDT (UTC -7). We will use a random number generator to determine the winner and contact the individual shortly afterwards. If they do not respond within 48 hours, we will then select another winner and so on.

CLARIFICATION
Today on Twitter, ArenaNet stated the beta key will only be for the next beta weekend event. This is news to the entire community, and we’re a little bummed this isn’t access for all events. If you are pre-purchasing the game (which is different than pre-ordering), you will be getting a similar beta key for all events and have no need for this. Otherwise, feel free to participate in case you are pre-ordering or would like to grab it for a friend so they can play with you! Source.

All that being said, be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Google+!

Download BnC Podcast 4 - World vs World, subscribe on iTunes, subscribe via RSS (we’re still working on the buttons!), or listen and check out the show notes after the break!

I’m definitely looking forward to WvW. I’m normally not a big fan of pvp in an mmo, but WvW looks great. I love the siege weapons and the keeps look amazing. It has just enough PvE mixed in with the PvP to keep it interesting. Kind of like WoW’s Alterac Valley, but on steroids! I also like how they anonymize enemy names so you can’t just find a weak enemy and camp them. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it seems to take too long to break down keep doors. I’ve seen videos where an entire team is blasting a door including siege units and it still seems to take 10 minutes! Anyway, can’t wait to play!

They have said that in the next beta you will see new siege equipment to help deal with how long it takes to bring down a door as well as some adjustments on the old ones. I agree with you on how long that takes so I hope that change will help :)

They stated the gold sink into becoming a squad leader will help prevent abuse, but can you think of a better way to deter this? 1) not enough people will be able to afford the training book 2) to afford the book you will have to have put the time into the game (hopefully) and know both your class (hopefully) and PvP (hopefully). What other level can YOU think to implement?

    • http://twitter.com/PurrfectStorm Margaret Krohn

We discussed a few ways that they could do this in this podcast. I suggested a possible leadership scoring system or using some kind of war rating. We also discussed some kind of fellowship, following or voting system. =]

      • http://www.gamerbc.com/ Tramell

I know you guys weren’t fond of the gold sink for Squad leader, but no matter what system you can create, players will find was to abuse it. Although, I’m not sure what would be an ideal system.

        • http://twitter.com/PurrfectStorm Margaret Krohn

Actually, we were VERY fond of the gold sink. We thought that the gold sink was fine, but we wanted something in addition to the gold sink, something that provides a quantification of their skills as a leader.

          • http://www.facebook.com/Maleficio Dante Ian Michaels

I had never thought of it, but the achievement requirement proposed by David sounds on the one hand genius, and on the other so simple as to wonder why the thought never crossed the mind. Perhaps even something as simple as “Take part in X number of WvW” could do well to show you were at least familiar with the game and its mechanics.

          • http://www.gamerbc.com/ Tramell

My mistake, I came away thinking you all weren’t satisfied with the gold requirement. An achievement requirement might work, but it would be hard to measure what makes a good leader stat wise.

WvW is definitely interesting to me. Coming from a DAOC/WAR background, WvW was a massive draw and one of the main reasons I am thinking about purchasing this game. The scale of the WvW map looks stunning, and the fact that they have integrated objectives into it, so it is not just a PvP gankfest. One of the main concerns I have, which the cast mentioned, is the zerg, which the devs hopefully have designed the area so as to eliminate any large advantages a zerg could have, like the size of the battleground for instance. Looking forward to this game, thanks for the cast.

I think the WvW will be good for people who do not like PvP in other MMO’s (like me)! There are better developed pve scenarios going on. I also love that the giant groups give people who are not necessarily good at pvp a chance to play without feeling like their actions can screw their group if they mess up (like in a 10v10). I think the developers had great foresight to keep people from doing WvW right after they transfer/change their server.

Also just my comment on the pod casts I kinda think the over 20 seconds of music at the beginning is a little overkill for people like me with short attention spans (also like me).

  • Anhrez

So did you see any increased density of gather-able materials in WvW?  I would expect that the game has materials tied to the level of the area you are in. Copper in the low, area and so on.  So if WvW is level 80 are the mats there all higher end, or are the lower end? (as in lower end of the skill spectrum). If the WvW maps have different levels of gathering material in different areas have you seen any pattern to their location? Like all the local maps (red, blue, green) all ahve lowbie but the contested map has a little higher materials to encourage movement to the more contested area?

Because of the scale of WvW I can honestly see myself enjoying pvp much more then I have in games lately.

I used to be a big fan of large scale pvp: DaoC, Planetside, and even games like lineage 2 and RO. I’ve been noticing games moving more towards this trend to make pvp smaller scale which like you said makes the zerg conquer all. Because of this trend I have lost a lot of my love for pvp in games. I can’t help but get frustrated and even though the scale of pvp is smaller I feel more like just a cog in a big machine then I did with large scale combat.

With everything I’ve seen/read about the WvW I’m more excited then ever before for some pvp. I feel like I’ll get the same feeling of grandeur that world pvp once had, while still allowing me to feel useful as an individual.
OH! and more Planetside references! That game had the best mechanics for persistent open world pvp that I’ve yet seen. Can’t get enough of them, thanks haha. :D

At no point was it ever “WvWvW” that’s just a term the community keeps using:

“Oh, I’ve got one last little tidbit. We’ve seen a couple debates about how world versus world is (or should be) abbreviated. If there are 3 servers involved, shouldn’t it be WvWvW? Just so you know, around the office it’s always just written out as WvW, and many of us have taken to just pronouncing it “wuv-wuh”!”

    Enjoyed the show.

I did play DAoC alot, and am most glad that the 3 sides will be balanced and the lack of Mes use on players (being turned into a punching bag with no input is no fun).

For the Squad leader I understand that the reason they are using Gold is that it means that you have to have played the game for a certain time, but doesn’t mean you have to have a character of a certain level. I think this discounts the effect of Gems (they may not be used to thinking of that economy effect). However, I am uncomfortable with “voting” some one in. What I think might work is that Achievements are already account wide, why not require a certain number or have particular ones that might show an understanding of the element of WvW. Then if you have those achivements and the money then Have your book.

Also from the interviews I read once you have the book you can at anytime just elevate yourself to Squad leader, I don’t think there is a continuing cost from what I’ve read.

While not much of a PvPer in most other games… seeing how it’s done in GW2, has made me very interested to give it a try again. There was something I really liked in DAoC that was a bit broken, I hope it works better here. Even the structured PvP looks interesting to me as it’s objective based not kill based.

I look most forward to seeing what can be done with supply and playing with those mechanics. I think I’ll be most interested in small unit raiding and the like. Though siege engines look awesome, I can’t wait to play with them, esp as the Trebuchet looks like it will need a spotter to call in the strikes (distance is apparently by how long one holds down the fire key).

If I get the key it’ll be to give to one of the lads who used to do RvR in DAoC all the time see if I can’t whet his jaded appatite ;)

The supply system is great. Yeah sure you have the castle but we have alll the supply! mwa ha ha ha

Hey folks, another solid show – and almost all of the auido issues are gone now…almost :D

I really appreciate the perspective given on WvW – always good to hear from people who know what they’re talking about.

World vs. World pvp looks amazing in Guild Wars 2. Along with charging into battle with a 50+ group, you can play more of a support role and bring up the supply of your bases, creating siege weapons, or get a small group and take the smaller camps while the rest of your army fights into the enemy castle. There will be actual strategy that will needed to be implemented to insure your server wins. True leaders can shine with the squad system, allowing for one mind to control all these people. Doing these epic, massive scale battles with your server will also create a sense of community, a sense of pride. I can’t wait for this game to come out.

I dont care if someone can pay to be a squad leader. If they suck ill leave and they will be the leader of no one.

I’ve enjoyed all the things you all brought up in this podcast! “Talking about it has made me more excited.” Listening has made me more excited!

    Best parts IMO are:
Reminder of WvW supply (and Dub VS dub haha)
Comparing to other games besides just WoW
When you brought up the squad system I had heard of it before but this is the first time it was fleshed out so that I could understand! I agree with many of the things you say, especially how gold is the way to receive the leadership roles.

I’ve just pre-ordered my copy of Guild Wars 2 but I still wish to enter the contest for the key so I can suck my brother in to play with me as well!

Thanks for making such a brilliant show

  • http://twitter.com/jonxwilliams Jon Williams

Nice podcast. I’m quite excited about the WvW so I was happy to hear more info about it. I definitely agree, that the squad leader should not be determined based on simply buying it. I also don’t expect that the non-PvP world will be empty. There’s always plenty of people who want to PvP, and plenty that want to quest. I think the world will be very lively at all times.

Just finished up listening. Great show again guys. Can’t wait to try out some WvW firsthand.

Can’t wait to get home and listen to what I’m sure will be another great episode! (You should be on stitcher so I can listen at work more easily :) )

Nice show again, a rating system/title track should definitely be integrated to squad commander system. Would be interesting and put off people who have no good use for it. I just can’t wait for world vs world but I can’t pre purchase it yet. I accidently bought an iPad this month forgetting I would have no money to pre purchase!….. nooooo

Guess the idea behind the gold is: you’ll need a group of ppl to fund it, hence it’s a group decission about who should lead it. But I agree it’s not the best way to do it.

Enjoyed the show, will subscribe. Keep it up!

    Another nice episode.

I believe you don’t gain XP in competitive PvP.
